Ozai and Azula
Two flavors of molten hot stacked-gain fuzz
I was asked about creating a pedal that got the gain-on-gain, Fender amp about to explode, riffy fuzz tones that bands like Royal Blood and Highly Suspect get. This is what came of it. First came what is now known as Azula. Right out of the gates the gain is intense and very mid-forward. Rolling back your guitar's volume will clean it up, but that's not what you get this pedal for. By the end of the gain control you have an imploding tone that goes squish with chords. Add in the lightning switch (Since we know Azula loves her lightning) and the gain is multiplied, the treble is boosted, and all sense of subtlety is gone. It's on brand for the character, if you ask me. Next came Ozai, which was initially designed as a bass version of the first pedal. It turned out to absolutely rock on both bass and guitar. The gain taper is much more gradual, starting with a smokey overdrive and landing in the familiar "this is going to burst" zone. Ozai is less mid forward and has a sturdier low end. Consider it the more calculated of the two fire benders. Until you hit the Comet switch. Almost synth-like amounts of fuzz saturation. Both Ozai and Azula feature the same control layout, with Volume, Burn (gain), Bright (tone), and the modifier switch. They absolutely rock for grunge, riff rock, and doom. Find out which flavor of fervent flamethrower you favor.
