Wrath of Archimedes
Solar Death Ray
A devastating crunch, distortion, and fuzz box with near endless tonal adjustment
Wrath of Archimedes Solar Death Ray, often SDR for short is an incredibly powerful drive device capable of crunch, distortion, and ripping fuzz. There is plenty of low end to go around, so it is ready for bass guitar. With two tone controls and three modifier switches, the sounds are endless. Let's start with the gain. Light crunch to a wooly fuzz can be had from the gain knob with the "Gain 2" switch down. If that isn't enough destruction, switch to Gain 2 and prepare for a reckless amount of distortion and fuzz. From there we go to the tone controls. The Tone control is a modified Big Muff style filter, with the neutral sound being in the middle, and boosting either high or low frequencies in either direction. The Mids control reduces the typical "mid scoop" that comes with this EQ style. At maximum Mids with the Tone control in the center, the EQ is nearly flat. If that wasn't enough tweaking, turn your attention to the switches on the side. Mids Shift changes the frequency of the high pass side of the tone control, allowing the Mids knob to boost. Play around and find your sweet spot. The Tight switch removes all the boomy bass frequencies and optimizes the pedal for guitar. Keep that one off if you're playing bass. Lastly is the Dark 1 and 2 setting, which cut off extremely high harmonics. It tames the top end to make it a little more guitar friendly. So there you have it, Solar Death Ray, the Swiss army knife of dirt boxes.
